Why San Antonio?    Executive Summary

Overview of Texas Economy

San Antonio , Texas, is one of the Top 10 largest cities in the United States and is home to some of the largest corporations, including AT&T, USAA, Valero Energy, and HEB Food Stores.  The Gross State product of Texas is estimated to be about $845 billion in 2005, third among the 50 States.  Two thirds of all trade between the United States and Mexico passes through Texas, which shares a 1,248-mile border with Mexico.  Texas surpassed California during the first three quarters of 2002 to become the leading exporting state in the nation.

San Antonio , Texas , continues to grow at a rapid pace with estimated population increases of over 10,000 people a month over the next five years.  Between the end of the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006, San Antonio had a total increase of 14,400 new jobs.  A larger number of these jobs are in the professional ranks.  Many of these jobs are part of San Antonio’s largest industry, Healthcare and Biosciences.  The largest contributors to the recent influx of new jobs are Toyota Manufacturing Plant, Toyota Suppliers, the National Security Agency, Washington Mutual, and Military Base Realignment.  In November 2006, Toyota alone will be opening a 2,000 acre site in San Antonio which is the largest car manufacturing plant in the world and is already scheduled to double in size over the next 18 months.

The Health of local economy has already brought a 12 % increase in sales tax in the first quarter 2006, compared to the prior year.  For the retailers, this means that there will be more consumers with higher paying jobs and more disposable income.

The growth in San Antonio has not just been isolated to the highly coveted Northern region.  As the Northern areas fill up, there has been a growth trend pushing businesses and residents to the Eastern and Western regions of San Antonio.  Developers are already divvying up the land around Loop 1604 on the West side of San Antonio where over 50,000 homes are slated to break ground in the near future.  Additionally, over 1,027 acres of single-family platted land was approved in San Antonio during the first quarter of 2006 alone.  The Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC), an organization dedicated to ensure the integrity of the base closure and realignment process, voted to endorse a plan that will make Fort Sam Houston the core center for Military medicine and Military medical training.  As a result, San Antonio will gain nearly 4,000 jobs on the Northeast side.
